Adding a Prescription During an Encounter
This flow details how a physician adds medication prescriptions to a patient's record during an active encounter. This assumes you are already logged in and have started an encounter for the patient.
- Access Encounter: Ensure you are on the active encounter page for the patient (e.g.,
https://physician.medtrack.io/patients/[patientId]/encounter/currentor similar). - Navigate to Prescriptions Section: Within the encounter interface, locate the section dedicated to Prescriptions. This might be a tab, a panel, or a specific area on the page.
- Initiate New Prescription: Click the Add Prescription, New Prescription, or similar button within the Prescriptions section. This will typically open a search interface or a form.
- Search for Medication:
- Use the search bar provided to type the name of the medication (generic or brand name).
- The system will display matching medications from its database.
- Select the correct medication, strength, and form (e.g., Tablet, Capsule, Syrup).
- Enter Prescription Details: Once the medication is selected, fill in the required details:
- Dosage: Specify the amount of medication per dose (e.g., "500mg", "1 tablet", "10ml").
- Frequency: Select how often the patient should take the medication (e.g., "Once daily", "Twice daily", "Every 6 hours").
- Duration: Specify the length of time the patient should take the medication (e.g., "7 days", "1 month", "Until finished").
- Route: Select the administration route (e.g., "Oral", "Topical", "Intravenous").
- Quantity (Optional/Calculated): Sometimes quantity is automatically calculated, or you may need to enter it.
- Instructions/Notes (Optional): Add any specific instructions for the patient or pharmacy (e.g., "Take with food", "Apply sparingly").
- Select Pharmacy:
- Locate the pharmacy selection field or button (e.g., "Assign Pharmacy", "Select Pharmacy").
- Search for the desired pharmacy by name, location, or other available criteria.
- Select the correct pharmacy from the search results. This assigns the prescription to be sent to or picked up from that specific pharmacy.
- Add to Encounter: Click the Add, Save Prescription, or Add to List button to add this specific medication order, including the assigned pharmacy, to the current encounter's prescription list.
- Add More Medications (If Needed): Repeat steps 3-7 for any other medications that need to be prescribed during this encounter. Ensure you select the appropriate pharmacy for each medication if required.
- Review Prescriptions: Review the list of added prescriptions within the encounter section for accuracy, including the assigned pharmacies. You can usually edit or remove prescriptions before finalizing.
- Complete Encounter: The added prescriptions will be saved as part of the patient's encounter record when you click End Encounter, Complete Visit, or Save Encounter. Depending on system integration, the prescription information might be electronically sent to the selected pharmacies. The finalized prescriptions can then be viewed in the patient's medication history or printed if needed.
